Napa in October

Becky and I, overlooking Barnett Vineyards’ lower terrace from Rattlesnake Hill

I usually don’t post things like this, but my wife Becky and I really enjoyed a long weekend getaway to Napa in mid-October. Sharing good wine with dear friends is on our agenda whenever we visit this part of the country, but we highly recommend making the trip in the autumn – the land and the light are especially beautiful this time of year.

It was wonderful to see David and Susan Sabin, who own Sabina Vineyards in St. Helena, at their annual Sabina Release Party. They debuted their 2011 Sabina Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and 2011 Sabina Vineyards Pinot Noir to raves from their guests. My personal favorite is their 2011 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – in my book, one of the best Cabernets ever produced. Be sure to stop by their reserve if you’re in the neighborhood.

Another stop was Barnett Vineyards, where we had the pleasure of tasting one of my other favorite cabs, the 2010 Barnett Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Barnett’s Rattlesnake cab – it’s out of this world!

Becky and Layla Fanucci

Becky and I also visited Charter Oak Winery, where the Fanucci family makes wine and art. Our good friend, the renowned artist Layla Fanucci, had just finished another one of her stunning signature layered cityscapes. (Look for Layla’s artwork on various Charter Oak wine labels.) It was a pleasure to catch up with Layla and her husband, winemaker Rob Fanucci.

Becky and I had a fantastic time in Napa, and look forward to our next visit.

All my best,
Frank
